5 Days in Puglia + Matera Through Our Sketchbooks | A Family Travel Diary
We spent five days in Southern Italy (Apulia), traveling as a family with our sketchbooks and trying to notice small details before they disappeared. We arrived at a windy, white-stone masseria near Cisternino among ancient olive trees and ended the day drawing what we remembered—my daughters sketching our room, the stormy sky, and the lamp. We painted the masseria, explored an old olive-oil mill, then wandered Polignano a Mare for gelato, espresso, panini con polpo, turquoise Adriatic views, and cliffside lookouts before continuing to quieter Monopoli for the port, narrow streets, and local pasta while we sketched as we waited to eat. On calmer days we visited empty off-season beaches like Sant’Andrea and Torre dell’Orso, then got lost in baroque Lecce. Later we saw Alberobello’s trulli and finished in Matera, overwhelmed by its rock-carved “negative architecture,” belvederes, and evening light.
